The organization that
represents Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails has, on April
30, 2003, issued a document expressing the political demands of
prisoners being subjected to brutal treatments and outrageous
sentences.
In a detailed statement, representatives of jailed Palestinians
in all Israeli prisons have issued a 15-point guideline
expressing the demands of all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli
jails. In these guidelines, Palestinian prisoners stated that
their imprisonment is a political one by nature, given that they
are involved in a legitimate resistance to Israeli occupation,
and in an ongoing struggle to pursue and fulfill Palestinians’
legitimate national objectives. They urge the Palestinian people
and their various political organizations, in general, and the
Palestinian Authority and its institutions, in particular, to
pressure the Israelis to implement a quick and immediate release
without giving consideration to their organizational
affiliation, seniority status, regional background and/or the
charges made against them, along with duration of their
imprisonments. They also warned that delays to address their
just causes would be considered inconsistent with the general
legitimate goals of the Palestinian people and with the nature
of their just efforts that expresses, among other things, the
Palestinians’ need for liberty and independence from Israel’s
repressive occupation. The prisoners also expressed their
general concerns with the upcoming political negotiations,
urging the Palestinian representatives to maintain their
commitments to the fundamental and just national goals of the
Palestinian people and not to allow themselves to be pressured
into accepting plans that are not consistent with the interests
of the Palestinian people or reflective of their just and
legitimate demands, mostly of which have been evidently
supported internationally.
